The International Institute of Social History will organize a small workshop on the question 'What is the working class?' The central issue is the clarification of theoretical issues, focusing on the nature and boundaries of the world working class.

The convenors of the workshop, Peter Alexander (University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg) and Marcel van der Linden (IISH), intend to publish edited versions of the papers presented as an edited volume.
