Van 5-21 mei brachten mijn vriendin Maud Kortbeek en ik een bezoek aan Zuid-Afrika - deels vakantie en vrienden opzoeken, maar ook met een aantal werkafspraken. Ondermeer met het South African History Archive (SAHA) in Johannesburg, de opening van een tentoonstelling over de frontlijnstaten in zuidelijk Afrika bij de Nelson Mandela Foundation (met een flink aantal foto's uit het IISG-bestand en foto's van Pieter Boersma, Ernst Schade en andere Nederlandse fotografen), het Lilliesleaf Museum in Rivonia, Paul Weinberg van de Visual Archives van de Universiteit van Kaapstad, het Mayibuye Centre op de Universiteit van de West-Kaap (UWC) en het Freedom Park in Pretoria. Aan het eind van het bezoek hadden we ook nog een gesprek met de nieuwe Nederlandse ambassadeur in Zuid-Afrika, Marisa Gerards, o.a. over mogelijke toekomstige projecten. De komende maanden zal ik flink wat follow-up activiteiten van dit bezoek gaan ontplooien.
From May 5-21 my girlfriend Maud Kortbeek and I paid a visit to South Africa - partly on holidays and to visit friends, but also with a number of work-related appointments. These included the South African History Archive (SAHA) in Johannesburg, the official launch of an exhibition on the frontline states in Southern Africa at the Nelson Mandela Foundation (with quite a few photographs from the IISH-collection and photographs made by Pieter Boersma, Ernst Schade and other Dutch photographers), the Lilliesleaf Museum in Rivonia, Paul Weinberg of the Visual Archives of the University of Cape Town, the Mayibuye Centre at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and the Freedom Park in Pretoria. At the end of our visit we also had a meeting with the new Dutch ambassador to South Africa, Marisa Gerards, a.o. on possible future projects. The coming months I am going to work on a number of follow-up issues of this visit.
