On 25 November, Suriname celebrates 40 years of independence from the Netherlands.
The Suriname-Dutch relationship dates from the 17th century.
It is an awkward story of colonisation, slavery and migration. A story with many gaps and mostly written from the Dutch perspective.
A small but special collection about Suriname at the IISH may provide new input for Surinamese historiography.
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary we selected:
- Shipped to Suriname, the Society of Suriname shipped all kinds of people to the new colony in 1683 (Web Expo)
- Colony of Suriname Mapped Out - a report on the 'state of the nation' in 1863 (Web Expo)
- Nurses from Suriname - photo albums of Surinamese nurses who emigrated to the Netherlands in the 1950s (Web Expo Historisch Beeldarchief Migranten, in Dutch)
- Bert Nelemans was a teacher and activist in the 1970s ( about his archive)
- Collection Suriname Comité
- The Collection Klaas Breunissen, documentation about Suriname and the Surinamese in the Netherlands in the 20th century
- 'Beschrijvinge van de volks-plantinge Zuriname ...'(1718), and many other books in the IISH Library
- All posters about Suriname in the library of the IISH
