From Malaquais' widow, the Institute received the political papers of the Polish-French writer Jean Malaquais (1908-1998). The archive contains several postwar documents on the Gauche Communiste de France. Influence d by Maximilien Rubel, with whom he collaborated as a translator for the Pléiade edition of Karl Marx's Oeuvres, Malaquais grew closer to the Workers' Council Movement. As a result, there are quite a few documents from the circle around Rubel to be found in Malaquais' papers, among them the minutes of the meetings Rubel organized in the fifties. Another important section is the correspondence with Marc Chirik, Rubel, Serge Bricianer, Raya Dunayevskaya, Julián Gorkin, Marceau Pivert, and others covering the period from 1945 onwards. Jean Malaquais published several works about his experience as a miner (Les Javanais) and during the war (Planète sans visa). The literary parts of his papers are now at the Harry Ransom Center of the University of Texas, where Malaquais taught French literature. (Text: Kees Rodenburg)
