Na lange voorbereidingen is het 'Centraleproject' op gang gekomen – het project waarbij het IISH zo'n 170 meter van zijn bekendste en belangrijkste archieven gaat digitaliseren (Marx, Engels, Bakunin, Nettlau, Descaves, Trotsky, Bebel, Bernstein, Bund, ...), en daarnaast nog 4.000 foto’s, prenten en posters, and 4.500 boeken en brochures (collecties Kashnor en Communistischer Arbeiter Bildungs Verein). Sinds 1 maart is Eva van Oene aan de slag met de materiële voorbereiding van de archieven. Eva zorgt onder andere voor de verpakking, volgorde en juiste indeling in inventarisnummers. Ze is begonnen met het archief Karl Kautsky, dat groot is en goed geordend. Toch komt er nog een vracht aan vragen en kleine problemen tevoorschijn, als je het blaadje voor blaadje doorwerkt… Als archiefstukken er slecht aan toe zijn, en niet zonder verdere schade te veroorzaken gescand kunnen worden, geeft Eva de stukken door aan Astrid Walsh, die de behoudswerkzaamheden uitvoert. Het gaat niet om restauratie, maar om kleine reparaties en het vlak maken van gevouwen of omgekruld materiaal. Intussen is Cor Brinkkemper bezig met het digitaliseren van beeldmateriaal, te beginnen met de klein formaat portretten, vaak fraaie studio-opnames met op de achterkant soms een even fraaie opdruk van de fotostudio.
Op 4 mei is de eerste proef-meter opgehaald door het bedrijf waar de archieven en boeken gedigitaliseerd gaan worden, Microformat in Lisse. Eind mei kwam de proefmeter terug, met een mobiele harde schijf met scans, die we controleren. Na de controle komen we waarschijnlijk nog tot een paar aanpassingen in de werkwijze en de scaninstructies, en dan stomen we door naar de eerste grote zending: 12-13 meter Kautsky, aanleverdatum 1 september!

Since 1 March, Eva van Oene is working on the material preparation of the archives. Eva takes care of the packaging, order and the correct division in inventory numbers. She started with the archive Karl Kautsky, which is large and well organized. Yet another load of questions and small problems appear, if you check every page... If an item is in a bad state, and cannot be scanned without causing further damage, Eva passes the item on to Astrid Walsh, who takes care of the conservation. It is not restoration, just minor repairs and flattening folded or curled items. Meanwhile, Cor Brinkkemper is busy digitizing images, starting with the small format portraits, often beautiful studio pictures, sometimes with an equally beautiful imprint of the name and address of the studio on the back.
On 4 May, the first test meter was picked up by the company where the records and books will be digitized, Microformat in Lisse. Early June the test meter came back, with a mobile hard disk containing the scans we are checking. After checking, we probably have a few changes to the methods and scanning instructions, and then we will steam through to the first major shipment: 12-13 meter Kautsky, delivery date September 1st!
