Katatura is a township of Windhoek, Namibia. It literally means 'a place where people don't want to live'. Migrant workers living in Katatura are leaving for their homes in Ovamboland (Namibia) on Christmas eve to celebrate with their families.
The Dutch photojournalist Frits Eisenloeffel travelled to various countries in Africa including Namibia. In December 1978 he went there to report on the elections. He also photographed workers in Walvis Bay harbour and migrant workers in Katatura. An exhibition of Frits Eisenloeffels photos is on the IISH website.
