Marshal Tito

Josip Broz Tito was secretary-general of the Yugoslavian Communist Party when, in April 1941, the Nazi's occupied his country. Tito (1892-1980) had fought in the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I and after having been made prisoner of war by the Russians had enlisted in the Red Army. Soon after the occupation of Yugoslavia in 1941 he started to organize the armed resistance. The Anti-Fascist Council of National Liberation of Yugoslavia met in Jajce (Bosnia) from 29 November till 4 December 1943. Tito was appointed to be Marshal of the provisional government of democratic Yugoslavia.
