In 1999 students in Tehran launched a campaign for political freedom. At first this centred on freedom of press, as the government had just closed a reformist newspaper. Some 200 students staged a peaceful protest on July 8 in front of their dormitories. Security forces, police, and others (including some who did not wear uniforms) surrounded the students. Soon they assaulted the students and detained many of them. Their rooms were systematically ransacked. Jamshid, an Iranian photographer, took photographs of the event, and this collection of 120 photos is now housed in the IISH.
