Mahmud Muhamed Taha (1909-1985) was executed on this day in Sudan.
Taha was the leader of the Republican Brothers, a reform movement within Islam. He propagated a new Islam, based on freedom and equality of men and women.
Taha was arrested while distributing brochures condemning the sharia, and executed on the grounds of apostasy.
All his publications were burned and the movement, with some 1,000 adherents, went into exile.
The IISH has copies of nearly all the Republican Brothers’ publications, and they can be viewed online.
