The famous Dutch painter Jan Sluijters received 1568 guilders for this portrait of Jan van den Tempel on 13 January 1950. Van den Tempel was a social democratic minister of Social Affairs from 1939 to 1945. Jan Sluijters experimented with various styles, including cubism and futurism, but his portrait painting remained naturalistic. Many prominent figures asked him to do their portraits. Sluijters also designed posters and book covers and political cartoons. The painting shown was donated to the IISH from a private collection in 2002. The paying-in slip is kept in the Van den Tempel archive.
