1848 was a year of revolutions throughout Europe. In Ireland, the Great Famine reigned. On 29 July 1848 miners, tradesmen and small tenant farmers led by the Young Irelanders nationalist movement staged a rebellion in the small village of Ballingarry, county Tipperary. The rebels besieged a police office,  there was an exchange of fire with the police and two people were killed. After the failure of this 'Famine Rebellion' or 'Battle of Ballingarry', its leaders were tried for high treason and exiled to Tasmania. A statue of Young Irelanders' leader William Smith O'Brien now stands on O'Connell Street, Dublin.
