La Voz del Mar (Voice of the Sea) was the journal of the Chilean sailors who formed a branch of the Industrial Workers of the World. Occasionally its pages had large blank areas: "This periodical is subject to military censorship." The crew of the steamship Palena on 29 August 1925 warned uncensured: "Do not sign on with captain Smith. This devilish immigrant, travelling from Antofagasta to Colosa, would have let a sailor who dropped off the ship drown. Fortunately the sailor was saved by an American boat."
