Well-known anarchists including Errico Malatesta, Emma Goldman, and Rudolf Rocker convened in Amsterdam from 25 to 31 August 1907. They discussed matters of organization and syndicalism and established the Anarchist International. The Dutch delegate Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis aroused a great deal of surprise with his proposal to drop the discussion on anti-militarism altogether and instead to shift it to another venue: the soon-to-be-held conference of the International Anti-Militarists, to be led by himself. Nieuwenhuis no longer took part in the Anarchist International after his motion was defeated.
