The reconstruction following the war led to large housing projects being built in the Netherlands in the 50s and 60s. Yet, by the end of the 60s, there were not enough apartments to meet the growing numbers of students and single-person households. Several groups, especially in Amsterdam, started to occupy empty apartments. This led to the first national squatters' day on May 5, 1970, with the slogan: "25 years after liberation and still homeless." The squatters used this "Handleiding voor krakers" [Guide for squatters], which had been published one year earlier.
