Népszava (The Voice of the People), the daily of the Hungarian social democrats, in its issue of 16 April 1939 covered the political situation in the Netherlands. Dutch affluence results from a liberal economy, political neutrality, rich colonies, and the low costs of a relatively small army. No doubt such a small army will succumb immediately if there is a war. The moment of catastrophe is approaching, according to the Népszava. Its front page is devoted to Roosevelt demanding that Hitler and Mussolini start negotiations for a peace treaty.
