After the liberation of Greece from the Nazis, a civil war started between the communists and the official government. On 12 February 1945, truce was signed between the (communist) ELAS guerillas and the governmen. Yet the fighting would continue until 1949.
The war against the Germans and the ensuing civil war left the country completely ruined. The book The Sacrifices of Greece in the Second World War was published in 1946. Based on data gathered between 1941 and 1944, its beautifully designed statistics shows the destruction of the country. The illustrations were exhibited in November 1944 in Greece, and in April-June 1945 in Paris, London, and San Francisco.
