On this day, a bomb hidden in a book killed Eduardo Mondlane, leader of the Mozambican Liberation Front FRELIMO.
Mondlane (*1920) started his career as a shepherd, studied anthropology in the US and worked as a UN official. In 1964 FRELIMO began a guerilla war to obtain independence from Portugal.

After Mondlane's death, the Mondlane Foundation was established in the Netherlands to support the liberation movements in Portuguese Africa. Its archive is at the IISH. Mozambique became independent in 1974.
