'Oppressed, not defeated' is printed in small type on a pamphlet published by the Bolivian Human Rights Committee about the Cochabamba massacre. On 23 January 1974 Indian peasants protested against the price increases and scarcity under the government of Hugo Banzer. His army killed at least one hundred peasants. The presidency of Banzer started in 1971 and enriched the language in Bolivia with a new term, 'Banzerato' . Banzerato is a synonym for oppression. In the course of 1974 the president prohibited all leftist political parties, trade union activities, and universities. The pamphlet was published after Banzer's demise in 1978.
