The method was copied from the Belgian milkman with his dog cart. According to the news magazine, dogs were an integral part of modern warfare. The German Army included 6,000 German shepherds. The tracker dogs were good at finding casualties in remote places. Others kept guard at night, watched prisoners, or went on reconnaissance patrol. The herding dog breeds excelled in ambulance services.
