God Save the Queen was one of twenty songs sung by the workers who had come to listen to the English labour leader Tom Mann on 14 January 1898. Tom Mann (1856-1941) had established the Independent Labour Party and was also deeply religious and active in the Labour Church. The Labour Church (1891) wanted to establish socialism on a basis of justice and love. The song lyrics carry this message in a very solemn way. Love for the fatherland, the simple workman, and God are accompanied by trumpet sounds, blazing storms, and hope on the horizon.
