In view of the presidential elections in Brazil in 1989 (the first direct elections since 1960), the Partido Comunista do Brasil launches a 20-point program for a peoples' front. The communists embrace the very promising candidate of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Lula lost by the narrowest margin. He was not to become president until 2002.
