10 November was known as Hari Pahlawan in Indonesia, the day of the heroes. On this day a victory over the Dutch occupying force in Surabaya was commemorated. In the mid 1970s people had to endure repression by the Suharto regime. In 1977/78 there were widespread student protests, even on Hari Pahlawan. Many student activists were arrested and condemned for 'spreading hatred' or showing contempt of the government. The result of the actions was increased repression on university campuses and of the press.
