Praise for IISH

The Institute and its Global Labour History Research Program were paid a high tribute by the late professor David Montgomery, one of the foremost academics specializing in US labour history.

He did so in an interview with the International Labor and Working Class History (ILWCH) editorial board in May 2011. Some quotations:

  • “Where could you have a more logical place to do international history, starting from early modern times on than Amsterdam? It has been central you know, will be for a long time to come.”
  • "People connected with the Institute or contacted by the Institute have a lot to do not only with giving us something of a worldwide vision, but also drawing our attention back to some of the early periods of European expansion especially......I think this kind of a longue durée emphasis can be very useful."

The interview is published in the special Fortieth Anniversary Issue of ILWCH (Fall 2012) that is dedicated to David Montgomery (1927-2011) and a debate on Global Labour History as a new disciplinary field.
