On November 14 the conference 'the Ethiopian Revolution at 40: Interpreting Social Effects and Historical Meaning was held at the IISH in Amsterdam'. The conference was meant to mark the fortieth anniversary of the Ethiopian revolution – on which the IISH has developed a sizeable collection – and highlight its continuing relevance in terms of the lasting and surpassed effects of the revolution on Ethiopian society. Participants included a mixture of some twenty senior and junior scholars based in Europe, Africa and North America, as well as former participants in the revolutionary movements. The conference, furthermore, was well-attended by members of the public. A good number of members of the Ethiopian community in the Netherlands were present, as were representatives of Amharic media organizations. The interest the conference generated has been very welcome, although the number of participants meant that presentations had to be kept relatively short. Despite this the outcome was very promising and the discussions were productive. A joint publication of a number of the papers presented at the conference is planned for 2015. Meanwhile we would like to thank all participants and attendants of the conference for contributing to a day full of interesting discussions.
