Lecture: Emancipation of Consumers in the Low Countries

Date:
7 February 2017
Location:
IISH, Posthumus Room

On February 7th Joost Jonker, will give a lecture on: 'From hapless victims of desire to responsibly choosing citizens. The emancipation of consumers in  the Low Countries’ consumer credit regulation'

Regulations, the law, and jurisprudence mirror society and thus change with it. That means we can usefully track shifts in how societies see particular issues by examining proposed legislation, jurisprudence, and lawyers’ debates about those issues. Of course one cannot always pinpoint whether shifting legal opinions lead society or the other way around, but at least they enable us to date changing opinions a little better.

Profile: From October 1, Joost Jonker has been working as a senior researcher at the NEHA / IISH. Together with Oscar Gelderblom (UU) he is leading the NWO project The dynamics of inclusive finance, in which the development of the financing of SMEs in the Netherlands since 1750, is being studied.
Jonker joined the IISH because of the IISH Research Department - which will facilitate the mutual exchange of knowledge - and the presence of the NEHA-collection.Previously Jonker worked at the Utrecht University. Since 2015 he has been holding a Professorship in Business History at the University of Amsterdam, a chair that is sponsored by the NEHA.
