Fotocollectie / photo collection Frits Eisenloeffel

Frits Eisenloeffel in Dembobet, Eritrea, April 1982

The last couple of weeks I worked on the photo collection of Dutch journalist and photographer Frits Eisenloeffel (1944-2001). Between 1974 and 1985 he made a series of trips to Africa, reporting on the decolonistion process and the early years of independence in the former Portuguese colonies of Angoloa, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, but also on Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) en Namibia. From 1980, he concentrated on the Horn of Africa, especially the struggle for liberation in Eritrea, and involved himself in the humantarian assistance to the local population suffering from war, drought and starvation.
The collection contains over 18.000 photographs (negatives), and slides of his travels, which are now made accessible throught a  a proper collection description. Also a related set of archival material, the archief Frits Eisenloeffel is available at the IISH.
