
In 1998 the Institute attained many of its aims for the years 1997-2000. Our new collection development plan in Asia gathered momentum. The number of visitors to our Web site increased spectacularly. The second European Social Science History Conference was even more successful than the first. And great progress was made in the publication of the Marx-Engels Gesamtausgabe, even though funding for the Russian teams is now precarious at best.
In general, we had a difficult financial year and barely managed to balance the budget. Still, turnover increased by almost 8 per cent from Euro 5.187m to Euro 5.559m (ca USD 6m).
