Friday, May 19 I had the opportunity to present on behalf of the International Institute of Social History a nicely printed and framed photograph from our collection to the President of Mozambque during a meeting with him in Museum Prinsenhof in Delft. President Nyusi (on stage) brought an official state visit to The Netherlands at the end of last week. It was a photograph from July 1979 showing the then President Samora Machel and four Dutch 'coöperantes' in Mozambique presenting him a gift in solidarity with Mozambique's relief programme for the victims of the flooding in Mozambique - see http://hdl.handle.net/10622/701FA493-E1FD-43CA-9362-37B63E8C38C0 I thought the photograph to be symbolic for the Dutch support to the liberation struggle of FRELIMO and independent Mozambique. At the presentation I was joined by Rudi Westerveld (right) who was also present in 1979. It gave me the opportunity to give some information about the Mozambique related holdings in the Anti-Apartheid and Southern Africa collection of the IISH. Earlier that day I also had the honour to be one of the guests at a lunch offered by the King and Queen to President Nyusi on Noordeinde Palace in The Hague as archivist Southern Africa of the International Institute of Social History. A real special experience.
