In SIngapore, the Filipino domestic worker Flor Contemplacion, aged 42,  was hanged for murdering her fellow maid and the little son of her employer on 17 March 1995. The trial was hasty and many Filipinos believed Contemplacion was innocent.  The president of the Philippines wrote to Singapore's president requesting clemency on humanitarian grounds. Contemplacion's execution sparked intense public outrage in the Philippines against Singapore and the abusive and exploitative working conditions migrant workers are subjected to. The film The Flor Contemplacion Story (1995) won the Golden Pyramid Award for best picture in the Cairo Film Festival.
