Between December 19 and 21, 2001 a massive popular rebellion overthrew Argentina's incumbent president De la Rua. Major demonstrations and street blockades took place throughout the country. It is estimated that up to four million participated out of a potentially active population of 30 million. The most popular slogan of the Piqueteros (picketer) Movement, Que se vayan todos! (Out with them all!) reflected the general hostility of the piqueteros - unemployed and underemployed workers and a substantial sector of the middle class - toward the political institutions.
