As one of the first Dutch entrepreneurs who also cared about the social welfare of his employees, Van Marken studied foreign examples of socially responsible housing. In 1882 he bought land behind his yeast factory in Delft, and asked the garden architect L.P. Zocher to design a park with cottage style houses. In July 1884 the first family moved into their house in the Agnetapark, called after Van Marken's wife.
