Just as in South African society, SARP, the magazine of the South African police, also had a special section for non-whites. 'Non-white news' in the January 1967 issue reports on Sergeant A.H. Xulu, who set an example as the only member of the Natal Division to have passed the recent promotion examinations. The text reads: 'He has successfully passed through the ranks within a period of nine years. He is stationed at Vryheid, and his motto is "Ora et labora".'
