PhD at the University of Amsterdam in 1980. Taught at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, 1980-1996 (from 1990 as Professor of Comparative History).
Since 1996 Professor of Modern Asian History at the University of Amsterdam and senior research fellow at the International Institute of Social History.
