Photos by Frits Eisenloeffel
Journalist Frits Eisenloeffel travelled to Mozambique in 1975 to capture in images the transfer of power from the Portuguese to Frelimo. Three weeks before independence the new Frelimo President Samora Machel launched a tour through the country in which he, accompanied by vice-President Marcelino Dos Santos, visited also the construction site of the Cahora Bassa Dam near Songo.
For years Frelimo was in doubt whether the dam should be destroyed to sabotage the Portuguese colonizers, or to be left alone, in case Mozambique would be liberated and the dam could be used by the state. The photos show the construction of the dam, Machel showed around by Portuguese engineers and the President addressing a crowd of workers and their family.
