Maandag 29 april jl. was ik aanwezig op een bijeenkomst in het Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg waarop de archiefwebsite van het ANC officiëel werd gelanceerd: http://ancarchives.org.za/ - in aanwezigheid van de Zuid-Afrikaanse president Jacob Zuma, andere ANC-bestuurders, veteranen, anti-apartheid activisten en enkele honderden andere genodigden. Deze website werd voor het ANC ontwikkeld door het Zuid-Afrikaanse mediabedrijf Multichoice, dat ook een deel van het ANC-archief heeft gedigitaliseerd. Op deze bijeenkomst vond ook de officiële overdracht plaats van het digitale archiefmateriaal uit de collectie van het IISG aan het ANC archief: bijna 2000 scans en digitale kopieën van foto's, posters, buttons, video's en audiomateriaal over de projecten en activiteiten van het ANC in de ballingschapjaren (grotendeels tussen 1970 en 1990) en aanvullend op het reeds in Zuid-Afrikaanse beschikbare ANC archief. Dit digitale archiefmateriaal zal de komende periode een plaats krijgen op de ANC archiefwebsite. Deze overdracht werd financieel mogelijk gemaakt door een bijdrage van de Nederlandse ambassade in Pretoria. Op de bijeenkomst werd door alle Zuid-Afrikaanse sprekers de Nederlandse bijdrage (en mijn persoonlijke rol daarin) nadrukkelijk geroemd en ten voorbeeld gesteld aan andere landen en instellingen die mogelijk nog voor het ANC en Zuid-Afrika relevant archiefmateriaal hebben. De overdracht werd op symbolische wijze uitgevoerd door de Nederlandse ambassadeur André Haspels aan president Zuma in de vorm van een fraaie ingelijste poster uit onze collectie (zie foto).
On Monday, April 29 I attended an event in the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg to launch the archive website of the ANC: http://ancarchives.org.za/ - in the presence of the South African president Jacob Zuma, other ANC officials, veterans, anti-apartheid activists and many other invited guests. This website has been developed for the ANC by the South Africa media company Multicoice, which also digitized part of the ANC archives. Another feature of this event was the official handing over of a lot of digital items from the collection of the International Institute of Social History to the ANC: almost 2000 scans and digital copies of photographs, posters, buttons, videos and audio materials on the various ANC projects and activities in its exile years (mainly 1970s and 1980s) and additional to the already available ANC archives in South Africa. These digital items will be included in the ANC archives website in the coming months. This transfer was made possible by generous funding from the Dutch embassy in Pretoria. At the event the president and other South African speakers praised the Dutch contribution (and my personal role in it) and presented it as an example for other countries and institutions with archival materials possibly of interest for the ANC and South Africa. The handing over of the IISH collection to president Zuma was symbolically done by Dutch ambassador André Haspels with a nicely framed poster from our collection (see photograph).
