What: The 1917 Russian Revolution is frequently looked at from a Western perspective. Hundred years after the revolution the International Institute of Social History looks at the impact on Iran, Central Asia and the Caucasus. IISH researchers Touraj Atabaki and Gijs Kessler present archival materials from the Iranian and Russian collections of the institute. This will be followed by a storytelling performance by Sahand Sahebdivani of Mezrab cultural centre.

2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the 1917 Russian Revolution. To commemorate this occasion, the International Institute of Social History is organising special events dedicated to its Russian collections throughout 2017.
The event
Iran and the Russian Revolution in Archive and Storytelling is organised by the IISH in close cooperation with the Amsterdam Initiative for Iranian Studies (AIIS) and Mezrab cultural centre. The event will take place at the IISH.
Through the papers of political parties, social movements, and individuals caught up in the events of 1917 and beyond, the archival presentations by Touraj Atabaki and Gijs Kessler will sketch the impact of the Russian Revolution on Russia, Central Asia, the Caucasus and Iran. These presentations will be followed by a storytelling performance by Sahand Sahebdivani.

About the speakers
Touraj Atabaki is an honorary fellow at the International Institute of Social History (IISH). He joined the IISH in 1995 and held the position of head Collection and Research Middle East and Central Asia.
Gijs Kessler is a senior researcher at the IISH and specializes in the social history of Russia and the Soviet Union.
Sahand Sahebdivani is a storyteller and founder of the Mezrab cultural centre. He was awarded the prize of Storyteller of the Year in 2014.
