
The year saw a hardening of unfavourable trends that are likely to persist in the foreseeable future. The Dutch government is gradually shifting part of the burden of the social security system towards the workplace, while public funding for research and education is on the decline, notably in the arts. Thus, in different
ways, IISH'S basic income has decreased by several percentage points over the past two years.
The Institute has certainly been fairly successful recently in obtaining thirdparty funding, but this is also becoming more difficult: some European programs to which we applied proved to have attracted many thousands of contenders for relatively small amounts of grant money.
