David Mayer
Profile
David Mayer, born 1976, is a historian specialized in transnational social history.
2014–2016 he has been acting as executive editor of International Review of Social History.
Recently, he was a research fellow at re:work – IGK Work and Human Lifecycle in Global History (Humboldt-University Berlin) (2018).
In 2017, he acted as “Global History Fellow" at the Centre of Modern Indian Strudies (CeMIS) / Platform For Global & Transregional Studies, University of Göttingen.
In 2011 he completed his PhD-research on the history of Marxist historiographic debates in Latin America in the ‘long 1960s’ (University of Vienna). He has spent lengthy research stays in Latin America. In 2004 he translated Immanuel Wallerstein’s „The Modern World-System III” into German. Between 2007 and 2011 he worked as a research assistant at the Department of Social and Economic History (University of Vienna).
Since 2013 he acts as vice-president of the ITH - International conference of Labour and Social History (http://ith.or.at/).
His main research interests are labour history, the history of social movements, the history of historiography, the history of Marxism and left-wing intellectuals, politics of history, and Digital Humanities methods.
David Mayer's current research “What labour had to say about labour” will build up a long-term and comparative picture about how different labour movements defined “work” and the “worker”. Exploring historical periodicals of labour movements from several world-regions and three time periods (1895–1905, 1920–1930, and 1945–1955), this project will analyse a large corpus of periodical literature in several languages. It will do so with a “hybrid approach”, i.e. using methods both of qualitative discourse analysis and digital text analysis. Linking “work” and “words”, his project will thus reframe one of the central questions of current labor history – the co-existence of diverse labor relations – by looking at how they were mediated by the discourses of labor-related movements.
