Patricia Herbert Collection on Burma

Tags:
Early 2018 IISH received a small collection on Burma from Patricia Herbert (London, 1943). Herbert studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), lived a number of years in Burma in the early seventies and was for many years (1975-1998) curator at the British Library for the South East Asia Collections.

This collection of Herbert consists of four parts. The first part is correspondence with several Burmese personalities, a.o. U Ne Win (1910/11-2002) (premier 1958-1960, president 1962-1981). Parts two and three concern U Maung Maung, the ‘Brigadier” (1920-2009)  and U Maung Maung (1925-1994), the president for one month. There’s correspondence with both (and in case of the second Maung Maung also with his widow), and there are different typescripts.
Part 4 contains some materials from the 1988 uprising of which we already had a collection present at the Institute (and which also came by the hand of Patricia Herbert) See the illustrations with this article for some examples.
