Conference 'Quo vadis, Exile Studies? Status and perspectives'.
During this scholarly conference, the Gesellschaft für Exilforschung GfE aims to explore the intersections and points of contact, similarities and differences between Exil research and Global Labour / Migration History in a comparative and interdisciplinary manner that exceeds episodes and regions. Subjects for debate will be: What can Exil research learn from the concept of Global Labour / Migration history and the reverse: What can Exil research, with its focus on transcultural questions and problems, contribute to Global Labour / Migration History?
The main themes of the conference will be the specific and general effects of Migration and Exil on the economy, labour and industrial relations, social and political structures and cultural and scholarly landscape in the country of birth, border regions and country of immigration.
An apt viewpoint of the presentations may be creation of the image of Exil in historiography, literature, theatre and media. Papers may deal with:
- Expulsions or exodus because of warfare, split-up of a nation or other political, social, ethnic or religious revolutions
- Social and cultural position of migrants before, during and after migration (integration, acculturation or remigration) from a gender-specific, historical or actual point of view
- Transfer of knowledge in science, culture and art
- Networks: Familiy, friends, professional and other organizations, either self-help religious, cultural or international, e.g. trade unions or Interrnational Labour Organization ILO
- Methods and fundamentals of research, both traditional and modern (media)
The GfE explicitly invites young academics (Master's students and - graduates) to contribute a "work-in-progress" paper to the conference. Your abstract has to be accompanied by a brief curriculum vitae.
Languages spoken during the conference: German and English. Interpreters are not available.
