The Federacion Anarquista Uruguaya (FAU) in July 1957 reported that "never before in the history of the world have prospects for the people been so gloomy. In Latin America especially there is a tendency towards military regimes. Let us remember Argentina, and Cuba, or Paraguay: let us remember." In 1957 the FAU and its newspaper Lucha Libertaria  were only one year old, and Uruguay was a democracy with a two-party system. In 1973 the FAU's fears became fact as the military took power and dissolved parliament.
