During the Russian parliamentary elections of 12 December 1993, Vladimir Zhirinovsky had an overwhelming success. His Liberal Democrat Party got nearly 25 percent of the vote. Zhirinovsky was liberal nor democrat. The ultra rightist nationalist spoke the language of the people. Cheap vodka for everybody was a slogan in his political programme. Nevertheless, in the consequent elections this did not lead to the smasher he had expected . In the presidential election of 1996 Zhirinovsky had 5.7 percent of the vote only, and his star sank as quickly as it had risen.
