Luíz Inácio Lula da Silva, like many other boys from poor Brazilian families, started his career as a bootblack. On his 57th birthday, 27 October 2002, he is elected president of Brazil. This is an historic victory for the left and his Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT). Lula, trained as a metal worker, had founded the PT in 1980. The party was initially Marxist but became democratic in 1990 and expanded its support to the middle classes. The archive of Lula's PT is on microfilm at the IISH.
