The Republican Convention on 23 August 1972 chose President Richard Nixon as presidential candidate. Nixon thereupon campaigned against the candidate of the Democrats, George McGovern. The main issues were "Law and Order" and Vietnam. The Americans had already begun to draw back, but the bombing continued. Nixon won the presidential elections but did not complete his second term as the Watergate scandal led to his downfall on 9 August 1974.
