In Venice the guilds marched in a huge procession for the new doge, Lorenzo Tiepolo, on 23 July 1268. For artisans, processions were opportunities to demonstrate craftsmanship and advertise themselves. In this particular procession furriers turned out appropiately clad in outfits trimmed with ermine, fox, and the skins of wild animals, while the weavers came attired in the fustians they had made. Doublet-makers marched in white jackets stitched with fleurs-de-lis and pearls, goldsmiths ostentatiously wore jewels, while glass-makers carried elaborate flagons.
