Iran Preparing for the "Undeniable Victory"

23 May 1982
BG D55/509

The invasion of Iran by the Iraqi army in 1980 was the start of a nine-year war between the two countries. It took the Khomeini government two years to strengthen its army and begin a major counter-offensive, called the "undeniable victory." On May 23, 1982, the Iranians attacked the city of Khorramshahr and President Saddam had to withdraw his troops. Thereafter the initiative in the war was with Iran.
