Grigorii Gershuni

Grigorii Gershuni (1870-1908), founder and leader of the Combat organisation of the PSR until his arrest in 1903. Initially, he was sentenced to death for his terrorist activities, but this was commuted to life imprisonment, and, later, hard labour in Siberia.
In 1906 Gershuni managed to escape in a cask for pickling cabbage and went into hiding abroad, where he engaged in fundraising for the party.
In 1908 he died in Zürich from a sarcoma of the lungs.

This double photo, in profile and en face, has a police search profile of Gershuni on the back and was most likely specifically made for this purpose. (Collection PSR, IISH)
